History and Facts of Fairfax Station Virginia
This historic train station located on Fairfax Road in Fairfax County played a major role during the Civil War. While the station was established in 1851, it was known as Lee’s Station during its first year of operation. In 1862, it was occupied by Union forces under Brigadier General Edwin H. Stoughton. During this time, a small skirmish took place nearby at Brimstone Hill. In 1865, Clara Barton, a young woman working at the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C., came to Fairfax Station to aid Union and Confederate soldiers. Her work as a nurse and advocate for the war would eventually lead her to become the founder of the American Red Cross.
A trolley line connected Fairfax to Washington, D.C. in 1904. The railroad station was rebuilt as prosperity returned to the area. In 1894, the rail line was double-tracked, and in 1903, the station moved to its final location. Fairfax Station was renamed Swetnam, reflecting the importance of one prominent citizen. In 1918, the town was briefly called Fairfcroft. From 1921 until the present day, the town was formally named Fairfax Station.
