The City of Chantilly is a census-designated place in western Fairfax County, Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,039. Chantilly was named after an early nineteenth-century mansion and plantation. Historically, the community was home to numerous military installations. The town of Chantilly, Virginia was home to several colonial plantations in the 1700s. In addition to the Chantilly Plantation, the area was home to the Leeton Grove, Leeton Plantation, and Sully Plantation. These homes were built by Richard Bland Lee I, George Richard Lee Turberville, and John Hutchison. One of the manor houses still stands today, a stone house across from the Greenbriar Shopping Center. It is believed that this house was originally the plantation overseer’s quarters during the antebellum period and was converted into a tavern or boarding house after the war. The Lees became deeply in debt and eventually sold the Chantilly estate.

The town of Chantilly is an unincorporated community located between I-66 and Rt. 50 in Western Fairfax County. Chantilly was the site of the Battle of Chantilly during the Civil War. Currently, the town is approximately twenty-four miles away from Washington D.C. and is a perfect location for business or pleasure. Visitors should not miss the Sully Historic Site, where Richard Bland Lee once lived. It gives visitors a glimpse of eighteenth-century life.
